Spider veins are tiny, dilated blood vessels seen in the skin usually on the face and legs. These veins are located just below the surface of the skin and due to their location, often appear darker and more prominent, being red, blue or purple in color. Although spider veins may result in itching and minor aches and pains, they are not a health hazard. They are mostly a cosmetic problem. Many women give up on wearing shorts or skirts because their legs look bruised or they are embarrassed by these tiny veins.
Spider veins are formed when veins become dilated and swollen with stagnant blood. Pregnancy and hormonal variations may stimulate their appearance. Spider veins are more common in women. Did you know that spider veins along with varicose veins affect over 50% of the population over the age of 55?
Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice for spider veins. A solution is injected into the vein. Blood is re-routed into nearby healthy veins. The injected veins shrink, close off and gradually disappear. The medication used is safe and effective. No anesthetic is utilized.
The tiniest spider veins may disappear quickly. Following treatment, the veins may look darker in color with some bruising and actually appear worse at first. Some blood may become trapped in the veins as they close down. This is expected and is addressed during your subsequent treatment sessions. Your first two treatments are the most important. The larger veins require a few weeks to improve their appearance. Time is the most important aspect during the healing phase. Please remember that the results are not immediate. A level of 70-80% overall improvement is realistic. Normal healing can take approximately 8 weeks.
Each treatment session is 20-30 minutes. Sessions are normally scheduled about 4 weeks apart. Most patients typically require 3 to 6 treatments, but this varies based on your individual condition.
All patients are instructed to walk in the days following each treatment. This helps to re-route the blood through the deeper healthier veins. Support stockings are used for seven to ten days to assist in healing and reduce any mild discomfort which may occur during treatment. Spider vein treatments are relatively painless. You can go right back to work, and your normal routine following treatment. You may drive yourself to your appointments.
